Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium reptans)
Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium reptans)
Jacob's Ladder is a woodland plant, with both excellent foliage and lovely flowers. The delicate compound leaves support a proliferation of small, lavender-blue blooms for several weeks in April or May. The early blooms offer a reliable source of nectar and pollen for some of the season's first pollinators.
A moderately shady site with loose, rich soil is best for this plant - it would be well situated in a garden on the north side of the house. Unlike so many other spring blooms, the foliage of Jacob's Ladder stays fresh and green all summer. Mature plants are typically around a foot tall and somewhat deer resistant. Mulch with leaves.
