Nodding Onion (Allium cernuum)
Nodding Onion (Allium cernuum)
Nodding Onion has soft, grasslike leaves and a 1-2 ft., leafless flowering stalk that rises to from a bulb. This perennial gets its name from the unique orientation of its flowers which face downward, "nodding" towards the ground. Pom-poms of star-like blossoms dangle from each hooked stem, blooming in shades of cream and pale pink. Plant in a mass for a stunning display.
This plant is edible and has medicinal uses similar to garlic. Indigenous people have used the bulbs as a treatment for croup, colic, colds and fevers. Nodding Onion has a pungent smell when crushed or bruised, making it deer-resistant. It is also drought tolerant.
