Sensitive Fern spreads rapidly and can form large colonies. Its fiddleheads appear in spring. Fronds are generally about 3’ and can be 4’ long. It is taller in wet soils, which it tolerates well. Grows well in average garden soil if it is not allowed to dry out. It is perfect around ponds or water gardens. The common name, Sensitive Fern, refers to its sensitivity to frost and drought. It is rabbit and deer resistant, and provides shelter for frogs.
