Stonecrop (sedum ternatum) forms a thick mat of succulent light-green leaves, covered with star-like white flowers in late spring and early summer. Less than a foot tall, it spreads by rhizome to form a splendid ground cover in partial shade. Easily grown in any well-drained soil this native sedum tolerates part shade and moist soils better than most other sedums. It is native to the east and east-central U.S. where it grows in the rocky woods and cliffs, as well as moist forests and wooded ravines. The name "stonecrop" speaks to its ability to thrive atop boulders and rocky outcroppings, where the succulent leaves help it retain moisture in shallow soil.

Stonecrop will establish quickly. Space your plants 12 inches apart. Stems can break away from the parent plant and take root to create new plants. Native stonecrop is perfect for the rock garden or along a shaded path. Avoid poorly drained conditions.
