Tufted Hairgrass (Deschampsia cespitosa)
Tufted Hairgrass (Deschampsia cespitosa)
Tufted Hairgrass is an ornamental bunching grass that prefers light to moderate shade and moist humus-rich soil. In summer, it produces tiny variable colored flowers in gold, silver, purple, and green on 2-3 foot stalks creating a cloud-like effect. The grass emerges green and turns gold late in the season, keeping good color and form for winter interest. An excellent shade garden grass, Deschampsia cespitosa is attractive when mixed with ferns. It is a larval food plant for several butterflies in North America including the Umber Skipper. The flower stalks will turn tan and last into winter. Songbirds eat the seeds and ground nesting birds shelter in the clumps. It is salt tolerant.
