Winged Sumac (Rhus copallinum)
Winged Sumac (Rhus copallinum)
Winged Sumac (Rhus copallinum) is a deciduous shrub, generally growing to 15' high and wide. It will spread by root suckers. Also called Shining Sumac for its glossy, dark green leaves, it is a great but underused plant. It’s very ornamental – multi-stemmed with attractive summer foliage that turns bright red in fall. The females produce 8" tall pyramidal clusters of greenish flowers that develop into red berries. The berries are an important food for birds in the winter. Probably best in naturalized settings, it grows well in areas that challenge other plants - full sun with poor, rocky, dry to medium soil. It is good for slopes to control erosion.
