Wood’s Sedge greets the spring season as delicate, slightly blue-hued blades. Creamy yellow seedheads follow shortly after in May and June, intermixing with the fine-textured carpet. As temperatures rise, this versatile sedge takes on the more typical green coloration. Although there are many similar Carex species, the distinctly red sheaths at the base of the stems is a distinguishing factor for Wood’s Sedge.

Carex woodii, as the name implies, is a woodland plant that can be found thriving under hardwood tree canopies. According to Mt. Cuba Center research, this sedge is incredibly adaptable and will perform well even in full sun. Growing in dense stands reaching 6-12” in height, Wood’s Sedge boasts a lush appearance that will tolerate light foot traffic and mowing. This species establishes best from the root, often spreading to form colonies.
