Yellowroot (Xanthorhiza simplicissima)

Yellowroot (Xanthoriza simplicissima) is an adaptable deciduous groundcover shrub that is not commonly available for sale. Its natural setting is the edges of streams or damp woodlands in dappled sunlight where it reaches 24 to 30 inches tall. The leaves have a bronze tint in spring, turning green in summer and golden in fall. Yellowroot has panicles of small flowers in late winter/early spring. It is adaptable to full sun where it will remain more compact at about 18 inches tall and have more red/purple fall color. It can withstand periods of flooding and can adapt to drier sandy conditions.
